June 18th 2005 turned out be a historic day in the annals of L G Sports. For the first time ever a foreign motor sports association purchased India’s premium racing cars - Formula LGB from L G Sports.
The
Sri Lankan motor racing fraternity headed by Rohan D Silva – the Karivaradhan
of Sri Lanka- along with Rayaz Farookh were the persons instrumental in buying
the first ten Formula LGB cars from L G Sports. The whole project was initiated
by Akbar Ebrahim, Chief Executive Officer, L G Sports when 30 drivers from the
Sri Lanka Motor Sports Association came to down to Coimbatore in February this
year to get trained under him.
The Formula LGB is a space frame chassis powered by a 1300 cc carbureted engine which has been modified by L G Sports developing 85 bhp and is also the premium class in the J K Tyre National Racing Championship And is run with special tyres manufactured and supplied by J K Tyres. This is an ideal entry level formula car for youngsters moving up the ladder from the Rotax Karting Championship.
The Sri Lankans are planning buy another 10 cars within the course of this year. The Sri Lankans will also be procuring the special tyres from J K Tyres to use in the different categories of racing they have in Sri Lanka. It is hoped that in due course racing between the Indians and Sri Lankans will take place in the Formula LGB class in India as well as Sri Lanka.
At a simple function held at Kari Motor Speedway, the first car was handed over to Mr. Rohan D Silva by Mr. B. Vijayakumar, Managing Director, L.G. Balakrishnan & Bros Ltd and Mr. Akbar Ebrahim of L G Sports. India’s racing sensation and 2004 National champion in the Formula LGB class Armaan Ebrahim was present on the occasion.
