Raipur – 17th September 2006: For the first time Raipur witnessed a spectacular motor-sporting event, ‘The Gulf Dirt Track National Championship’, in their city.

All roads for the motor sporting enthusiasts lead to the Science College ground where the event was staged. Age and sect was no bar it was only the passion for motor sport that brought the viewer who were anxious for such an event.

Few came to cheer their friends and families and few for the love of the sport, to witness the dare devils on their 2 – wheelers who were to show their skills. Some of the best riders of the country participated. Professional riders from TVS Racing Team added glamour to the show, exhibiting their skills at high speeds, their breaking ability over bends and controlling their machines superbly in the slush. Besides these professionals, there were also experts from Bangalore, Coimbatore, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Pune, Nashik and Mumbai were geared in their best to prove their supremacy.

This event was sponsored by Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd., which is the 2nd largest private sector company in the Indian Lubricants market, supported by Chhattisgarh Tourism Board (CTB) and organized by Mumbai’s Sportscraft, in association with Chhattisgarh Motor Sports Association (CGMSA) under the aegis of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India which is the recognized body by the Government of India.

At 10:30hrs the first event was flagged off by Honorable Governor of Chhattisgarh State Shree Lt. General K. M. Seth (Retd.), the event was entertaining and the nail biting finish was spectacular. Each event proved to be better then the other.

Honorable His Excellency the Governor of Chhattisgarh State Shree Lt. General K. M. Seth (Retd.), was the Chief Patron, Mr. Brijmohan Agrawal, Tourism Minister, Chhattisgarh State was the Patron of the event and also H’ble Mr. Ajay Chandrakar, Minister, Higher Education and Panchayat, Govt. of Chhattisgarh and H’ble Mr. Sunil Soni, Mayor, Raipur were present to support and give a boost to the event.

Overall, there were 12 classes. In the (Indian Expert Class) foreign two- wheeler category, Karan Kadam of TVS Racing on his TVS 250FX grabbed 37 points and clinched a step ahead towards the championship. He was followed by H. K. Pradeep and Pramod Joshua who received 33 and 30 points respectively.

Rustom Patel of Mumabi on his Suzuki in the Motorcycle above 80cc upto 150cc group B (Private Expert Class) and Arvind K. P. of TVS Racing on his TVS in the Indian Novice class, topped the podium Sanjay Minj proved a cut above all in Local class.

More than the prize money, a lot of which was distributed at the end of the event, it was the glory and honor that spurred the participants on to great displays of thrilling two wheeling. And of course the fact that the points earned in this leg will add to the total points at the end of the five legs, making or breaking the hopes of the would-be champion.

Mr. Bijoy Poul , Sr. Manager Marketing (Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd.,) gave away the prizes. During the occasion he said, “The events are being organised in order to inculcate a riding discipline among two-wheeler riders as also to give them a chance to enjoy the thrill of racing and display their riding skills in a safe environment, without the fear of injury or getting hurt”.

It is the second year in succession that The Gulf Dirt Track Challenge has been staged. An event nurtured by the Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd., which is the 2nd largest private sector company in the Indian Lubricants market.

It was Sportscraft’s 250th event from its inception in 1983. The clock work precision and the total smoothness of running a motor sports event, which has given Sportscraft pride of place in motor racing, was in abundance on Sunday as been in all their events.
