JK Tyre National Racing Championship Akbar
Ebrahim & Gaurav Gill share honors in Formula Rolon Chevrolet |

Banajee took the honors in the 2nd leg of the J K Tyre National
Racing Championship 2006 which was held at the Kari Motor Speedway
at Coimbatore today. After a wet and cold Saturday during the qualifying
sessions, Sunday saw the sun back in full splendor lighting up the picturesque
track at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore today. The array of the dazzling
new racing cars added to the festive atmosphere. Lighting up the track with
his presence was the fastest Indian and Formula 1 racer Narain Karthikeyan.
It was formula racing reaching its zenith in Indian motor sports as the much
awaited premium racing vehicle Formula Rolon Chevrolet made its debut at the
Kari Motor Speedway today. The 2 ten lap races in this category literally blazed
the track with nail biting finishes which kept the huge crowd enthralled.

Akbar Ebrahim of Team NK was off to a brilliant
start in Race 1 but had to contend with 2nd in grid Delhi racer and rally champion
Gaurav Gill of Team Wallace Sports who gave
him a hot chase. Akbar held on to the lead in a fascinating duel till misfortune
struck in the form of broken drive shaft forcing Akbar out of the race. This
propelled Gaurav Gill into the lead and had no problems in
taking the chequered flag. Chennai racer Gaurav Dalal of Prime
Racing finished in 2nd place. Although last years junior karting champion
from Hyderabad and Team Speed NK Racing did well to finish
3rd he was excluded after he was found to be underweight. This brought Rayomand
Banajee from 4th to the 3rd place. Gaurav Gill clocked
the fastest lap timing of 01:09:8. However In Race 2 Akbar Ebrahim
came up with a splendid performance to take the chequered flag in style. Zooming
off to a great start, Akbar kept up the pace to move ahead and build up a comfortable
lead which forced Gaurav Gill to be content with 1 2nd place finish. Mumbai
lad Ameya Walavalkar of Tewam NK finished
third. Akbar timed the fastest lap of 01:08:983.
The day began with Race 1 in the Formula LGB Swift category. Pole leader Saran
Vikram from Chennai got to an impressive start to build up a good lead.
However another promising youngster and JK Tyre junior cup champion Ajay
Kini also from Chennai came up with an exceedingly good drive to almost
pip Saran to the post. Perhaps, had the race run the full 15 laps instead of
14, there could have been a change in the top two slots. There was another intense
tussle for the 3rd and 4th places between Saahil Shelar and Karthick
Shankar with Saahil ahead till the final lap when
a brilliant move from Karthick put him past Saahil and put him in 3rd place.
Ajay Kini had the fastest lap timing of 01:12:224. All the three are from Team
Wallace. Race 2 saw Saran Vikram once setting up a blistering pace
to win by a huge margin over his nearest rival Ashwin Sunder.
Despite finishing 3rd Ajay Kini had the fastest lap timing of 01:12:246. Saran
Vikram has now won all the four races in the championship.

Race 1
in Formula LGB Hyundai saw Rayomand Banajee from Pune and Team
Meco Racing in full command as he raced determinedly to finish in first
place. Starting in pole position, Rayomand drove well to gain a comfortable
lead and held it till the last. Ajay Kini continued his good
run as he move up from 3rd to finish 2nd. Mumbai lad Saahil Shelar
of Rams Racing finished third. Rayomand had the fastest lap
timing of 01:12:982. . Race 2 had to red flagged in the 5th lap following a
mishap involving the vehicles of B. Vijay Kumar which rolled off the track in
C 1 as ah tried to avoid a pile up of vehicles which were maneuvering to get
into the lead. The race was rerun and the number of laps were reduced to 7.
Ajay Kini came up with a good effort to take the chequered flag pushing pole
leader Rayomand Banajee into 2nd place. Sudarshan Rao from Bangalore racing
for Rams Racing finished third. Ajay had the fastest lap timing of 01:12:389.
The 3rd round of the championship will be held in Chennai on 23rd and 24th of
this month.
