The heat
of Chennai’s summer did not deter the racers who had come down to Chennai
from various parts of the country to participate in the 3rd and 4th rounds of
the JK Tyre Racing Cup for Juniors being held at the MMST track
at Irungattukottai. The Formula Maruti category had a grid of 15. The event
of Esteems was run as a support race. At the end of the first race in each category
the grid position for the first 8 places were reversed based on their qualifying
timing i.e. who qualified first had to start in 8th place, 2nd in the 7th place,
3rd in the 6th etc. This was the 1st time this concept was introduced by the
organizers to give the newcomers a chance to develop their racing skills.
Championship
leader in Formula Maruti category Ajay Kini continued his good
run from Round 1 and 2 to take the pole in the qualifying races held earlier
today. Race 1 saw a good start for the top 3 in the grid with Ajay Kini
barely managing to hold his position to emerge a very close winner.
Despite giving a very hot chase Saran Vikram could just not
nudge past Ajay and had to be content with 2nd place. Sudarshana
Rao finished in third place. Race 2 which commenced with the reversed
grid had to be red flagged following a three vehicle pile up in lap 2. The race
was restarted as a six lapper. A fighting performance from Deepak R
who started in fifth place saw him move up to execute his first win in the championship.
Championship leader Ajay Kini who started in 8th place showed
his championship qualities by displaying tremendous driving skills which saw
him almost annexing this race, but Deepak held on to just squeak
ahead forcing Ajay Kini to finish in 2nd place. Saran
Vikram who started in 7th place finished third.
Earlier, in the Esteem category it was the lad from Vizag and pole leader Bolisetti
Sailesh who took the honors in Race 1 with a sterling performance.
Finishing in 2nd and 3rd places were Chennai racers Saran Vikram and
Bharat P V respectively. Race 2 which started also with a reversed
grid saw Saran Vikram starting in 6th place come up with an
excellent effort to move up and win the race very comfortably. Abhinand
Shankar finished 2nd while P V Bharat finished third.
Round 4 will be held on Sunday 30th April. The race timings for the 4th round
have been revised and as per the new schedule the races will commence at 11.15
am.
