18 year old
Armaan Ebrahim, the youngest driver on the grid
drove a superb race in Rd 5 (Super Sprint race) at the Sentul
Circuit, Indonesia, starting from 4th on the grid to take a well
deserved 2nd place thereby putting him in the lead in the championship
by 4 points over American Seth Ingram.
Armaan who dominated the practice sessions by
being the quickest in the mornings official practice session,
had problems in the qualifying run and was not able to go quicker
on his set of new tyres as compared to his old tyre times.Armaan
qualified 4th while Aaron Lim qualified on Pole with Earl Bamber
( New Zealand) in 2nd and Setria ( Australia) in 3rd.
With changing
conditions the ideal set up was difficult to get and Armaan had
to put his head down for the race to finish ahead of Setria to
take over the championship lead. The rolling start was tight as
all cars dived into the high speed 4th gear corner leading onto
a high speed 5th gear corner. By the middle of the first lap Armaan
made a great move on Setria to take 3rd place and 6 laps
later made another fantastic move to pass Earl Bamber to then
take 2nd place. By this point of time, the leader Aaaron Lim had
built up a reasonable gap and Armaan settled for a sensible 2nd
place in the 15 lap race.
Commented Armaan : It was a
difficult morning. After being quickest in practice yesterday
and in today morning’s official practice by more than half
a second, we suddenly lost our way in qualifying. There was just
no grip in the new tyres and we did not find any time on new tyres
as compared to our practice runs on the old tyres. However, I
knew I had a good race car and I was confident of making a few
places in the race. While being aware of the first rounds crashes,
I di not take too many chances in the first few corners, but then
managed to increase my pace and pass the 2 cars in front of me.
Despite the rear sliding a lot I was able to maintain a good pace
and finish 2nd. The team did a great job to recover from 4th to
2nd and hopefully we will find the right balance for the Grand
Race tomorrow.
